Take one look at the Best Friends by Sheri OrthoComfort Deep Dish Cuddler and you’ll understand why we had to include it in our top 5 cat beds. Fashioned from ultra-soft and snuggly sherpa fabric, it’s the crème de la crème of comfort. Perfect for a cat who loves to lounge.
Of course, there is more to a cat bed than just how cozy it is. So, today, we’re going to be reviewing it from every angle. We’ll also be considering other reviewer’s perspectives and giving our overall verdict at the end.
Note – this pet bed is designed for both cats and small dogs, but we’re (of course) looking at it from a feline perspective.
What Is It?
As the name implies, the Deep Dish Cuddler is a pet bed designed with comfort in mind. It’s similar to a traditional donut-style cat bed, except the side and back walls are higher. The bed is fashioned from a luxurious sherpa material, which is softer than many other cat beds available on the market.
The main attraction of this bed is that it claims to help with joint pain (hence “OrthoComfort”). It does this thanks to its high sides and rear wall, which support the animal’s back, head and neck. The manufacturer does warn that these effects may be lost on animals which are smaller than 10lbs. On animals of any size, though, the high walls, warm sherpa fabric and ample stuffing provide security and warmth. This, the company claims, promotes more healthy and restful sleep.
Sounds good to us! But let’s look in more detail.
Is It a Durable Cat Bed?
The Best Friends by Sheri OrthoComfort Deep Dish Cuddler appears to be well-made. The stitching and seams are high quality, making the bed reasonably durable. A particularly rambunctious dog could tear the seams by chewing or pawing, but cat owners shouldn’t have anything to worry about.
Reviewers are generally agreed that the quality and durability of the Cuddler is good. However, one reviewer does remark that the material does wear over time. As with any “fluffy” or high-pile material, it will show signs of wear with prolonged use. This does not affect the function of the bed, merely the appearance. Most of the wear should wash out, fortunately.
It is worth mentioning that the bed is deliberately flexible and soft. This allows cats (and dogs) to stretch out and manipulate the bed into whatever shape or position they find most comfortable. So, if you’re looking for a firm-walled or “sturdy” bed, this may not be the one for you.
Is It a Washable Cat Bed?
This is where we’re really impressed. Most cat beds we’ve seen can only be vacuumed, spot-cleaned or hand washed. The Deep Dish Cuddler is not only machine-washable, but it’s also safe to go through the tumble dryer, too! This may be the only cat bed that we’ve seen which is dryer-safe.
The manufacturers advise that you should wash your Cuddler on a gentle cycle, and set the dryer to low heat. Because the bed is relatively lightweight, it shouldn’t take a long time to dry.
With machine washable cat beds, we sometimes worry that the bed will lose its shape. However, the walls of the Cuddler are bar-stitched, meaning that the stuffing can’t clump or migrate. Reviewers are generally happy with the bed’s washability. One or two reviewers have claimed that the sides of the bed collapse once washed, but most haven’t experienced this issue.
Is It a Well-Designed Cat Bed?
The bed’s, at its widest point, measures 20″ by 20″ (though bear in mind that the sides are thick). It’s suitable for animals up to 20lbs, so any cat should fit with ease.
High 9″ sides wrap around the circumference of the bed, with a 12″ rear bolster wall. Larger cats can use the walls of the bed as a head rest, or simply snuggle up inside, feeling surrounded and supported. The high walls provide more security than a standard donut bed.
The exterior sherpa fabric is irresistibly soft. It mimics sheep’s wool, but as it’s made from polyester and cotton, it’s suitable for vegans. The fabric’s self-warming quality imitates a mother’s fur. With regards to padding, the bed is generously filled with high-quality stuffing. A water- and dirt-resistant material lines the bottom of the bed, which is a nice touch.
We do need to mention that the bed does come shrink-wrapped and folded up. When you initially open it, the bed may seem floppy, lopsided or misshapen. To restore its proper shape, vigorously shake the bed out, massage the stuffing to fluff it up, and reshape it with your hands. The manufacturer doesn’t make this very clear, leading to some negative reviews. Also, as the bed is lightweight, it has a tendency to move around easily and tip over. We feel that the bed could do with being weighted on the bottom.
Is It a Comfortable Cat Bed?
There isn’t really much that we haven’t already said about the bed’s comfort levels. This is hands-down one of the comfiest cat beds we’ve ever come across. We’re really impressed with the softness and snuggliness of the sherpa fabric, which any cat should adore. It helps to retain the cat’s body heat, providing a really warm space to rest.
The base of the bed is adequately padded and “squishy”, creating a comfortable pillow to lie on. You always have the option of adding another cushion if you wish, but you shouldn’t need to. Its high sides envelop your kitty, helping them feel safe and wrapped up. But because of the bed’s size and flexibility, your cat is able to stretch out if he wants to.
Finally, the Cuddler has deep crevices around the cushion at the base. This allows cats to burrow and snuggle deep down into their beds.
Is It a Cheap Cat Bed?
The Best Friends by Sheri OrthoComfort Deep Dish Cuddler is quite reasonably priced. It’s not exactly what we’d call a “cheap” or “budget” cat bed, but the pricetag certainly isn’t extortionate. If you keep in mind the high quality fabric, generous stuffing and size, it’s clear why this bed costs a bit more than a basic donut bed.
This bed is definitely a lot cheaper than many high-end cat beds you’ll find on the market. Though you could find a cheaper one, it likely wouldn’t offer the same quality or comfort level. We think it’s worth the price just for the fact that it’s machine washable and tumble dryer safe!
At present, the Deep Dish Cuddler has over 2,600 reviews on Amazon. It’s one of the best selling cat beds that the site offers, and it’s easy to understand why. It has a high star rating, and the vast majority of reviewers give the bed 5 stars out of 5.
Unsurprisingly, the main benefit of this bed that reviewers mention is its softness, warmth and coziness. The sherpa fabric and generous stuffing appears to be a big hit with cats and dogs alike. Several reviewers mention that they wish Best Friends by Sheri made a human-sized version of this bed! One reviewer in particular fights over his cats for use of the bed, as he likes to use it as a foot-warmer.
Negative reviews are in short supply, the main qualms among reviewers involve the size and structure of the bed. Some people claim that it’s too small for their pet (but all of these are dog owners). Other reviewers have trouble with the sturdiness of the bed, claiming that it collapses or flops in on itself. Though many cats and dogs appreciate the stretchiness, some may prefer more stability.
After taking everything into consderation, let’s round up what we’ve learned and give our Catmart verdict.
The main pro of this bed is, of course, its soft and cozy quality. For cats who like to sleep on soft materials, you can’t go wrong with this bed. We like that the sides are higher than most other cat beds, and it has extra padding, providing extra comfort. We love that cats can stretch out and manipulate the bed into any shape. The fact that the bed is safe for the washing machine and tumble dryer is a huge bonus, too.
As for the cons, we’re not a fan of how the product is packaged. Because it arrives folded up, it’s difficult to regain the bed’s shape, requiring a lot of shaking and puffing up. We would also prefer if the bed had a little more structure and stability, to prevent it from flopping in on itself. We also can’t ignore how the bed is very lightweight, meaning that it can tip over easily.
So, the final verdict: here at Catmart, we give the Best Friends by Sheri OrthoComfort Deep Dish Cuddler an 8 out of 10. It’s a great, comfortable and warm bed for cats of all sizes. We just feel that easily-startled cats may not appreciate the fact that the sides can fall down, and the bed can tip when pets are adjusting their position.
